From Shadow Shift to Solo Sessions: How New RBTs Ramp Up at The Sunshine Academy

Starting as an RBT can feel like standing in someone else’s session—watching, taking notes, and wondering when you will run the plan yourself. At The Sunshine Academy in Broken Arrow, new RBTs do not jump from training videos to solo caseloads overnight. We use a clear ramp: shadow shifts first, then guided practice, then independent sessions with coaching still close by.

That structure matters for kids and for staff. Families trust that the person running their child’s session is prepared. New clinicians trust that they will not be left guessing alone on day three. If you are considering an RBT role in Broken Arrow or Tulsa, here is what the ramp-up usually looks like.

Shadow shifts: learn the room before you lead it

Early days focus on observation. You sit with an experienced RBT or BCBA, learn the child’s preferences, see how pairing works in real time, and practice data without owning the full session yet. Shadow shifts are not busywork—they are how you learn the pace of the clinic, the language of our programs, and the small cues that keep sessions calm.

You will also learn our locations and routines across 2208 W Detroit St and 304 N Beech Circle. Knowing where materials live, how transitions run, and who to ask mid-session is part of competence—not something you should have to invent alone.

Guided practice: you lead, with backup

Next comes coached sessions. You run more of the activities while a mentor stays present to model, prompt, and debrief. Feedback is specific: timing of prompts, how to reset after a tough moment, and how to keep data accurate without losing connection with the child.

  • Practice running programs with a mentor in the room

  • Debriefs that focus on one or two skills at a time

  • Support for communication with supervisors and families

  • Time to ask “why” behind procedures—not only “what”

Solo sessions with ongoing coaching

When you move to solo sessions, you are ready to lead—but you are not abandoned. Check-ins with supervisors, case reviews, and side-by-side problem-solving continue. The goal is confident independence, not isolation. Strong RBTs grow when coaching stays available after the first week.
